Background
Bombardier Challenger 350, operated by NetJets, was forced to land at Samarkand International Airport (SKD) in Uzbekistan due to a turbine starter failure on March 22, 2024. The aircraft required a replacement part, but the customer faced significant challenges with import. Without local fiscal presence in Uzbekistan, the customer was unable to legally import the parts into the country. The aircraft remained grounded in Samarkand for a week, incurring substantial costs, until Sterling (a Kuehne + Nagel Company) enlisted Delta Global Solutions to resolve the AOG issue.
Challenge: Importing Aircraft Part into Uzbekistan to Fix an AOG (Aircraft on Ground) Case
Delta Global Solutions had to address two critical issues:
Facilitate legal import of a replacement turbine starter into Uzbekistan
Deliver the engine part to aircraft maintenance site urgently to minimize the aircraft downtime
Before the customer discovered Delta Global Solutions, they lost an entire week looking for an AOG service provider in Uzbekistan who could also act as an Importer of Record, resulting in substantial costs for the carrier.
Solution: Importer of Record Service for AOG Case in Uzbekistan
Delta Global Solutions took immediate action by stepping in as the Importer of Record (IOR) to attend to the aircraft grounded in Samarkand. Leveraging our AOG and aerospace logistics expertise and local customs knowledge, we successfully managed the entire process from import clearance to door delivery.
March 28, 2024: Delta Global Solutions prepared all shipping documents, carefully assigning HS codes for hassle-free customs clearance of the aircraft parts in Uzbekistan
March 30, 2024: The replacement part arrived from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Tashkent International Airport (TAS). Our AOG team promptly filed the customs declaration despite the shipment arriving on Saturday
March 31, 2024: We had the shipment inspected and cleared by Tashkent Airport customs on Sunday
March 31, 2024: The aircraft part was delivered overnight to the technician waiting at Samarkand International Airport Airport (SKD), allowing repairs to commence immediately
Delta Global Solutions maintained communication with the customer through our 24/7 AOG Control Tower in Tashkent, providing real-time updates and resolving any issues quickly. The Challenger 350 was repaired and departed Samarkand (SKD) Airport shortly thereafter.
Reverse Logistics
Once the aircraft repair was completed, the old turbine starter needed to be returned to its origin. Delta Global Solutions facilitated the reverse logistics process by preparing all export documentation and securing customer’s approval for shipment. Leveraging our Exporter of Record (EOR) services, we were able to organize seamless export of the old aircraft part from Samarkand back to London Heathrow Airport (LHR). This operation was part of Delta Global Solutions’ reverse logistics portfolio, which includes services such as faulty parts return and asset recovery, aiming to maximize the value of unused or end-of-life assets.
Conclusion
