What Is Road Feeder Service

Road feeder service, frequently abbreviated as RFS, refers to last mile delivery of air cargo using road transport. Saying otherwise, road feeder service effectively means bonded trucking of air cargo from the gateway airport to the final destination airport or bonded warehouse. Likewise, road feeder service is also used for first mile deliveries, i.e. to ferry shipments from smaller “offline” airports or customs warehouses to major air hubs for onward carriage to the destination airport.

The primary logic behind combining air and ground transport is to link so-called “offline” points or smaller airports to major air hubs for air cargo consolidation, better capacity management and cost-savings. Being an essential component of modern air cargo supply chain systems, road feeder services are technically treated as an extension of air cargo transport on the ground, with the trucking segment assigned a flight number and booked via airline cargo reservation systems.
